The next day, Adelheid and her companions retrieved their horses to make their way to the county lord's mansion. Among the six, only Sofia did not know how to ride, so she sat behind Matilda.

"Sofia, stop hugging me so much, I can't breathe!" Matilda complained.

Sofia's response was to tighten her grip around the younger girl's waist and refuse to open her eyes. "Can't we just walk or take the carriage? I don't like horses."

"Miss Matilda, if you cannot withstand Miss Sofia's embrace, I offer myself as a sacrifice in your stead," Rowan, ever the opportunist, said as he steered his steed near. Sofia's response was to bury her face into Matilda's back.

"Why, weren't you fine on the way here?" Matilda asked.

"It's not like I'm scared of horses, but when I'm too close, I just freeze," Sofia said.

"Isn't that just being scared?" Matilda asked.

"Just shut up!"

Adelheid glanced at the trembling Sofia, but upon seeing that she wasn't in any danger, she turned her gaze back to the road. Her eyes scanned the crowds as she passed them. When she felt their gazes, her hand unconsciously drifted toward her wand. Upon realizing what she was doing, Adelheid forced her hand back onto the reins.

The ride toward the count's mansion didn't take more than an hour, and just before the group arrived in front of the walls, Matilda said, "Hold on a second!"

Adelheid turned around to see Matilda pull a hood over her head, or at least tried to. "Can you not stick so close to my back for a second?"

Once Sofia loosened her embrace, the aspiring knight pulled a hood over her head. Then, she pulled out a metallic mask that covered the lower half of her face.

Adelheid turned toward Neun with a questioning look upon seeing the familiar mask.

"Young Miss?" Neun asked, wondering if Adelheid had any orders.

"No, it is nothing," Adelheid said. "Ready?"

"I'm ready!" Matilda said, then paused for a moment before repeating her earlier words but with a much deeper voice. "I am ready."

Adelheid shared a look with Herja and Rowan, but in the end, none of them said anything. Forget it, as long as Matilda was happy.

The party reached the mansion gates and handed the guards the letter. The guards read the letter and nodded. The two opened the thick iron gates to the estates and said, "Come in. The count is waiting."

'Not ominous at all, not at all,' Adelheid thought as she rode first, followed by the others. Observing the grounds, she saw the marred grounds and even a few warriors practicing, the sound of steel against steel reaching her ears. 'How spartan.'

When they neared, they dismounted their steeds and allowed the stablehands to take them away. Then, a gruff-looking butler welcomed them into the mansion. Inside, they were greeted by two rows of butlers, their muscles ill-suited for their uniform, but the one who caught Adelheid's eyes was the scarred-eyed head butler in the middle. stood at least two meters tall with his arms crossed.
